Overall rating 4.5/5The Citroen DS3 was the car which kickstarted the new wave of DS-badged vehicles. Rivalling the likes of the Mini Hatch and Fiat 500 in the retro-infused compact car segment, the DS3 took the standard C3 chassis and added more style and character.
Only available in three-door form, the DS3 is a great option for drivers looking to carve through the city in a car with a lot of personality. It’s readily available on the used market here at AA Cars, too, so there should be a version right for you.
First introduced in 2009, the Citroen DS3 gets features such as speed assistance and electronic stability control included as standard. There are also ISOFIX child seat mounting points on the outermost rear seats, too. When it was crash-tested by Euro NCAP in 2019, the DS3 was awarded a full five-star rating, so it should remain a safe option today.
The Citroen DS3 was launched with 1.4- and 1.5-litre petrol engines, while a 1.6-litre diesel was also launched as another option for drivers. There is also the option of either manual or automatic gearboxes, with the latter being a four-speed on earlier models or an improved six-speed version later on. When facelifted in 2015 an additional 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine was added.
All versions of the Citroen DS3 come well-equipped as standard, with highlights being air conditioning, electric windows and mirrors, as well as cruise control which can help on longer journeys. The DS3 was available in a near-endless variety of special-edition models, too, including DSStyle Ice, DSStyle Pink and DSSport Red. There’s likely to be a version to suit all drivers.
Expect to see around 38mpg during mixed driving with the petrol-powered models, though this can drop slightly on automatic gearbox versions. The diesel, meanwhile, can return up to 78mpg, making it a very fuel-efficient option. The later 1.3-litre three-cylinder petrol offers great levels of efficiency, too, and is accompanied by a claimed fuel economy figure of 60mpg.
As a popular city and town car, the Citroen DS3 could be prone to car-park damage and kerbed alloy wheels, so make sure that you check the alloys and bumpers. Inside, make sure that the plastics haven’t been scratched too heavily. An AA Vehicle Inspection could be a way of getting even more information about a car you’re looking at. A trained engineer will take a detailed look at the car and report their findings straight back to you.
The DS3 has a reasonable record for reliability, though for added peace of mind we’d recommend an AA Vehicle Inspection which can help to flag any underlying issues on a car that you’re looking at.
The Citroen DS3 is available with 1.4- and 1.5-litre petrol engine as well as a 1.6-litre diesel. Later on, a smaller 1.3-litre three-cylinder petrol was introduced to the range.
