Overall rating 4/5The little C1 arrived as Citroen’s most compact model when it was launched in 2006 amid a joint venture between the French firm and both Peugeot and Toyota. Designed to be low-cost and cheap to run, the C1 immediately found favour among first-time drivers thanks to this car’s low insurance group, as well as others that needed a cheap, low-cost runabout.
It’s the updated second-generation car - introduced in 2014 - that we’ll be focusing on here, as it brings greater levels of technology and a more modern look.
The Citroen C1 gets an electronic stability control system equipped as standard as well as a seatbelt reminder. There are also ISOFIX child seat anchor points on the rear chairs and a variety of airbags installed throughout the cabin.
There are two engine options available with the Citroen C1. A 1.2-litre petrol was available from launch, though it’s the 1.0-litre three-cylinder that you’ll see most commonly on the used market. The 1.0-litre was also available with either a five-speed manual or five-speed automated manual gearboxes.
All versions of the C1 get electric front windows, body-coloured bumpers and anti-lock brakes included as standard. Higher-spec versions - such as ‘Flair’ grade - get extras such as air conditioning, heated mirrors and folding rear seats. The C1 was also available as an ‘Airscape’ model which introduced a retractable cloth roof. It’s great for those who like the open-air experience.
Citroen claims up to 68.9mpg for the 1.0-litre-powered C1, while pre-2017 cars actually qualify for free road tax due to their low emissions. The 1.2-litre version, meanwhile, is still very efficient and should return up to 65.7mpg. All of these figures are generated under older NEDC testing procedures, however, so may be slightly more than what you’ll see in regular driving.
The C1 is a popular first-time car, so check external bumpers for car park damage and make sure the clutch is operating as it should. A very high ‘biting point’ or any signs of slippage could point towards a clutch which is on its way out. But if you’d like an expert to case their eyes over a used Citroen C1 that you’re looking at then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection as a way to get extra information.
Because of their simple design, Citroen C1 cars have proven to be reliable and easy to maintain. Plus, replacing body panels shouldn’t be too expensive should some damage occur. An AA Vehicle Inspection can help should you be concerned about any issues hiding underneath a car, so see what options we’re able to provide today.
The Citroen C1 is available with 1.0- and 1.2-litre petrol engines.
