Overall rating 4.5/5The Citroen DS4 is made to turn heads – but it's more than just a pretty face. From its launch in 2011 as an upmarket hatchback under Citroen, to the more recent DS-branded version, it always offered something a little different in a world of lookalike cars. The first generation (2011–2018) stood out with coupe-inspired styling and hidden rear door handles, competing with cars like the VW Scirocco and Alfa Romeo Giulietta. It was surprisingly practical too, with a roomy interior and boot bigger than some rivals. The second generation arrived in 2021 under the standalone DS Automobiles brand, upping the ante with sharper styling, advanced tech and a more luxurious feel, going head-to-head with premium hatchbacks from Audi, BMW and Mercedes. First-generation models offer petrol and diesel, while the plug-in hybrid E-Tense arrived from the second generation (2021 onwards) – so whether you're focused on fuel savings or low emissions for city driving, there's likely a Citroen DS to suit. Drivers love its cushioned ride, sleek interior and generous kit list, all wrapped up in a package that dares to be different.
The latest DS4 comes with a suite of advanced safety features, like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, LED headlights and parking sensors. Add the Safety Plus Pack and you'll get rear cross-traffic alert and extra driver aids. It scored a five‑star Euro NCAP rating when equipped with the Safety Pack Plus. Standard models are rated four stars.
First-generation DS4s (2011–2018) came with 1.6-litre petrol engines – VTi or the punchier THP – as well as 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels. From 2021, the line-up got a refresh: there’s a 1.2-litre PureTech petrol, a 1.5-litre BlueHDi diesel, more powerful 1.6-litre petrols and a 1.6-litre plug-in hybrid (E-Tense). All are automatic, with no manual gearboxes on newer models.
Recent DS4s include a digital instrument cluster and a 10-inch central touchscreen with DAB radio, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Higher trims add extras like a head-up display, navigation, wireless charging and premium sound. Some users find the system a little fiddly compared to German rivals.
Petrol versions tend to return around 45–49mpg, with diesels pushing past 60mpg. The E-Tense plug-in hybrid claims up to 232mpg – but that depends on frequent charging and short journeys. In real-world use, expect 50–60mpg if you're not plugging in often.
Make sure the infotainment, safety kit and touchscreen all work properly. For plug-in hybrids, check the battery charges as it should. A full service history is key, and for extra reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The DS4 shares its mechanical parts with tried-and-tested models from Citroen, Peugeot and Vauxhall, which helps give it a solid base. DS ranks mid-range for reliability, and newer DS4s come with a three-year warranty as standard. Plug-in hybrid versions also include up to eight years of battery cover.
