Overall rating 4.5/5Practical and spacious, the Citroen C3 Picasso has been a go-to for families ever since it was released in 2019. Citroen knows a thing or two about making MPVs, after all, and the Picasso name has been used to denote some of the most versatile models in its back catalogue.Â

Overall rating 4.5/5Outright versatility is what the C3 Picasso is all about. It’s why you’ll find so many family-focused features inside, such as hard-wearing plastics and seats which are easily to fold. The car’s relatively upright stance gives a clear and commanding view of the road ahead, too, and will be a welcome change to those used to conventional hatchbacks.
As you might expect from a Citroen, it’s also made to be easy to repair and economical to run. Today, the C3 Picasso is a common sight on the used market and it makes for an excellent pre-owned purchase, particularly if you’re looking for a car that’ll make family journeys a lot easier.Â
A family-focused car needs to be a safe one and in this area, the C3 Picasso does well. You’ve got good levels of adult and child occupant protection, though double-check to see which specification car you’re looking at - entry-level VT cars only got two airbags, whereas VTR+ models gained side airbags for better protection. A full electronic stability control system is included on all models, however.Â
If you’re looking for petrol power, then the C3 Picasso is available with a 1.4- or 1.6-litre unit, with the latter providing extra punch - though neither is all that efficient. More popular are the diesels, which are both 1.6-litre but offered in two states of tune.
You’ve also got the option of a manual gearbox, or an automated manual. The latter is akin to an automatic, but is quite jerky in operation.Â
Base cars are quite sparse in terms of standard features, with these cars getting a CD player, electric front windows and ISOFIX child seat points. They do, however, go without air conditioning, which is something most families will want. VTR+ cars are a better bet as they get air conditioning as well as alloy wheels, the aforementioned side airbags and cruise control.Â
You can expect to get between 35 and 40mpg from petrol-powered C3 Picasso cars, while the diesels offer a more efficient experience and should return up to 50mpg.Â
The C3 Picasso is pitched as a family car so, if you’re looking at a used one, we’d be checking the interior for damage and rips to the upholstery. You may want to check the doors for dings, too, as well as scratches along the boot sill caused by loading heavier items. Check out an AA Vehicle Inspection if you’re after a clearer picture of any used car you’re looking at. With it, you’ll get a full breakdown of any issues the car you’re considering the purchase of might be suffering from.Â
The Citroen C3 Picasso is a reasonably simple vehicle, so when well maintained it should prove reliable. It’s a good idea to go through and test all of the major features, too, including the powered wing mirrors and windows to ensure that they’re working as they should be. An AA Vehicle Inspection can help to take some of the guesswork away from buying a used car, too.Â
