Renault gives first glimpse of new Laguna

Renault has released the first details of its new Laguna, stating that the car will have an "elegant exterior style" combined with an emphasis on "pleasure, quality and safety".

The appearance of the new car is described as "dynamic, fluid and elegant", with streamlined optical headlights on the front end, a sloping bonnet and 16- or 18-inch alloy wheels, depending on the particular model.

Close attention has also been paid to the inner workings of the car, according to Renault, with a new "impressively light" chassis, precise steering and a choice of engines and gearboxes.

Power levels ranging from 110hp to 175hp are on offer in the new engine line, with either 1.5- or two-litre units available. The range is also capable of an economy rate of 55.4mpg and emissions of 136g/km, according to the manufacturer.

The new Laguna’s braking performance is reportedly one of the best in its category, with "new-generation" ABS technology as well as an electronic stability programme and electronic brake assist.

A number of approaches have been employed to give the new Laguna "the quietest cabin in its class", including the improvement of insulation between the engine compartment and the cabin and treatment of engine noise levels.

The hatch and sport tourer versions of the new Laguna will be debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September
