Mitsubishi has announced that its award-winning ‘i’ minicar will be on sale in the UK from July 1st 2007.
The car, which will have a highly-specified model launched for £8,999, has already achieved "cult status" in Japan, according to Mitsubishi, as well as critical and commercial success.
Its achievements have been attributed to its "futuristic styling, agile handling, clever use of interior space and comfortable ride".
The rear-mid engine, four-seater car is powered by a 64bhp, 660cc turbo engine and will include automatic transmission, climate control, a CD player and electric windows as standard equipment.
Jim Tyrrell, managing director of Mitsubishi Motors UK, commented: "We displayed the ‘i’ at Badminton Horse Trials, the British Motor Show and at a number of key dealerships around the country and the public reaction was wholly positive.
"The ‘i’ has already become a cult car in Japan and we’re confident that its space and sophistication, coupled with Mitsubishi’s reputation for quality and reliability, will also make it a hit in the UK."
During 2006, over 37,000 units of the ‘i’ were sold in Japan and the model was named the car of the year by the Automotive Researchers and Journalists of Japan group.
