Overall rating 4/5Whether tackling muddy lanes, towing with confidence or carrying seven in comfort, the Mitsubishi Shogun does it all. There have been several generations of this robust 4x4, with the most recent running until 2018. The Shogun was offered in short- and long-wheelbase forms, covering a basic three-door all the way up to a roomier five-door, seven-seater. Mitsubishi focused on refining the interior, improving safety and updating engines over the years, making the Shogun more appealing for family and utility buyers. While some rivals are more comfortable and refined on road – think the Hyundai Santa Fe and Kia Sorento – the Shogun’s real strength remains its off-road capability.
Models from 2007 offer strong basics like stability and traction control, side and curtain airbags and a solid body structure. Mitsubishi claims the car is good enough for a four-star safety rating by Euro NCAP, but it hasn't ever officially been tested.
Most recent Shogun models use a 3.2-litre diesel engine. Older generations offered some petrol engines, too, though these will be harder to find. The diesel is sturdy and suited to heavy work like towing, though it can be quite noisy.
Standard kit varies by trim and year. Expect basics like air conditioning and electric windows. Higher trims feature sat nav systems and reversing cameras to assist with parking.
Official figures suggest around 30mpg for later 3.2-litre Shoguns. Real-world use may be a little thirstier, especially if you go off-road or tow regularly. Petrol variants will naturally consume more fuel.
It’s important to check for a full service history, especially given the Shogun’s likely working life. Inspect for rust and wear on suspension and brakes. Don't forget to check that the 4WD system smoothly changes between modes. The AA Vehicle Inspection can offer extra peace of mind before buying.
The Shogun was built to last. It has a great reputation for reliability, even for vintage models from decades ago. Just keep up with regular servicing and pay attention to bodywork corrosion on older models.
