Expert Opinion

One of the most striking elements of the Ford Ranger is the large and bulky design, but as the brand's leading pick-up, such immense styling shouldn't come as a surprise. As such, one of the used Ford Rangers we have is ideal for those after a powerful or spacious vehicle, but as you might have guessed from the ‘pick-up' description, it can also be used commercially. Three different body types can also be found, the single, double and super cabs – the latter being the best bet for business use. Ford doesn't cut back on refinement either and there's a choice of trims, with even the entry level options being quite well-equipped. Despite the bulk, it still manages to handle pretty well, but the real show-stopper is the power you can get from the wealth of gutsy diesel engines, even the entry-level 2.2-litre options. If you're looking for something more affordable, don't worry too much about performance, as the older second-hand Ford Rangers can still pack a punch. The 2015 ‘Wildtrak' models for example can have commanding 3.2-litre engines, bigger 18-inch wheels, improved pulling power and off-road capabilities. As you might have guessed, overall they're not the most economical, but if you want something dependable that can haul and get you to your destination, a used Ford Ranger from AA Cars is a top choice.

About Ford Ranger

Though the Ranger existed in other markets before, it wasn’t until 1998 that this nameplate was officially seen in the UK on an ‘international’ model. Based on a Mazda pick-up, it was a quick success. A second-generation model followed in 2006, offering a more imposing design and improved quality.

But the Ranger’s breakthrough came in 2011 with the third-generation of this truck. A significant step forward in terms of design, interior quality and on-road performance, it’s helped to establish this Ford as a leader in the pick-up market ever since.

Why buy a used Ranger?

Pick-ups are vehicles you either love or hate, but with many more appreciating the lifestyle qualities of them in recent years, their sales have continued to grow in recent years.

If this lifestyle is important to you, there are few better options on the market than the Ford Ranger, with its bold styling and sheer choice of derivatives and designs meaning it’s not difficult to make this pick-up stand out from the crowd. Despite this, though, more utilitarian entry-level versions are still available for those wanting more of a ‘working truck’, with two-seater versions on offer, offering a longer load bed length.

The Ranger’s performance both on road and off it is seriously impressive too. Because of the way pick-ups are built and engineered, many can feel compromised on tarmac, feeling a bit rough and ready. No such issue affects the Ranger as it feels particularly car-like behind the wheel, while its strong diesel engines mean it’s very competent at higher speeds – useful for those taking their car on motorways.

But it’s still an excellent choice if you need to take your vehicle off-road, particularly with the Raptor version, which features a particularly advanced suspension setup that means few vehicles are more competent when the going gets tough. The Ranger is also capable of towing up to 3.5 tonnes with a braked trailer, making it one of the most accomplished towing vehicles around.

The Ranger is also available with some rather advanced technologies too, including a head-up display, park assist and adaptive cruise control. Self-parking functionality is even available, which could come in very handy considering this pick-up’s size.

Ranger updates

Here’s a short history of the UK-sold Ford Ranger, which dates back to 1998.

  • Though the Ford Ranger was first shown in 1982, international versions didn’t actually launch in the UK until 1998, which we’re calling the ‘first generation’. It was based on the Mazda BT-50.
  • A second-generation Ranger arrived in 2006, bringing a tougher exterior look and completely redesigned interior. More powerful engines were launched too, with the model bringing a noticeable improvement in quality.
  • The Ranger was expanded in 2007 with a Wiltrak model, adding a range of new styling elements, along with a more powerful 3.0-litre diesel engine.
  • The third generation ‘all new’ Ranger was introduced in 2011, and was a significant step forward with its more modern design, new engines and raft of technologies.
  • In 2019 Ford launched the extreme ‘Raptor’ version. Designed for tough off-roading, it has a range of mechanical and styling changes, and is developed by Ford’s Performance division.
  • Also in 2019 the Ranger introduced a new 210bhp 2.0-litre diesel, offering improved efficiency, along with enhanced driver assistance and standard equipment.
  • Late in 2022 Ford will introduce its new fourth-generation Ranger, bringing a more purposeful look, new levels of technology and improved dynamics.

What should I look for when buying a used Ranger?

  • Have a good look underneath the Ranger for any signs of damage that might have come from off-roading.
  • The spare tyre for the Ranger is kept underneath it – make sure it’s still there as it could cost a few hundred pounds to replace.
  • Be cautious of low-mileage diesels, as they are prone to having a clogged-up diesel particulate filter.
