Overall rating 3.5/5With its compact footprint and pure-electric power, it’s a practical choice for cleaner driving on busy city streets. Designed to bring zero-emission driving to everyday motorists, the Mitsubishi I-MiEV stood out for its simplicity and compact shape. An early entry into the UK's all-electric market and sold through to 2016, its main draw was accessible battery-electric motoring at a time when there were few rivals except for the Nissan Leaf, the Citroen C-Zero and the Peugeot iOn – the latter two actually being based on the same design as the I-MiEV. The I-MiEV was a reworking of Mitsubishi’s ‘i’ city car but swaps petrol power for an all-electric drive. It’s easy to manoeuvre, with a surprisingly spacious cabin for its size and a no-fuss design. Don't expect to be taking on long road trips with any early all-electric car, especially not one designed specifically for shorter trips. But if you need convenient, fuss-free travel in town, the I-MiEV remains a straightforward option – though later EVs are a step up for comfort and refinement.
The Mitsubishi I-MiEV comes with standard safety kit including ABS, electronic stability control and front airbags, plus side and curtain airbags on some versions. It was awarded four stars by Euro NCAO in 2011, though its basic construction means protection is modest by current standards. Isofix mounts are fitted for secure child seats.
The I-MiEV is fully electric, powered by a single 16kWh battery pack driving a rear electric motor. There are no petrol, diesel or hybrid models. All UK cars share the same powertrain, offering around 62bhp and a single gear automatic setup, making driving around town as easy as it gets.
Technology is simple and focused on efficiency, with climate control, radio/CD player and electric windows. Later and higher-spec models offer Bluetooth, heated mirrors and a charging timer. Don’t expect flashy screens or modern infotainment, but the basics you need for everyday driving are present.
The I-MiEV is an all-electric car, delivering an official range of up to 92 miles on a full charge, though real-world figures can be closer to 60-70 miles depending on use and weather. Charging from a 240V socket typically takes 6-8 hours.
Focus on the health of the battery – you should ask for evidence of range and charging capacity – as well as a full service history. Examine interior wear and make sure charging cables are present. For extra peace of mind, consider booking with The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Generally, the I-MiEV’s simple design and limited moving parts help with reliability. However, as an early electric car, battery aging and range loss are to be expected over time. Otherwise, regular service and careful charging are key to avoiding problems.
