Category write-offs

A vehicle that has been in an accident will be assessed by insurance companies and assigned a category: A, B, S or N. However, we only list Cat S or N cars as Cat A and B cars are not roadworthy and safe.

Category S (formerly Category C)

The 'S' in Cat S stands for structural damage. This means the vehicle has damage to its structure/chassis, which is more than just cosmetic damage. But the vehicle can be professionally repaired, making it safe and roadworthy.

Category N (formerly Category D)

Similarly, the 'N' in Cat N stands for non-structural damage. Here, the vehicle has sustained damage, but it has not affected the structure/chassis. A Cat N car is safe to drive as the damage could be minimal/cosmetic.

Buying a written-off vehicle:

  • Do a full vehicle history check to identify category vehicles.
  • Make sure to check with the dealer if a Cat S/N vehicle has been professionally repaired.
  • Book a vehicle inspection and our experts will look over a Category vehicle for you.
Exclusive breakdown offers - Terms and Conditions

Offers can not be redeemed in a breakdown situation. New AA member offers are available for the first 12 months of cover only and are not available to existing members or at renewal. Discounts or promotions are not applicable to Parts & Garage cover, or to Key Cover, or to cover for Commercial Use. Cover will start 24 hours after activation. The premium for basic breakdown cover will be paid by Used Car Sites Limited (trading as AA Cars) for the first 12 months of cover only. If a customer chooses not to take the free Basic Breakdown Cover and instead purchases an alternative breakdown policy at the point of activation, payment will only be available by monthly instalments and annual payment will not be available. Other fees may be payable by you in accordance with the terms and conditions. You'll receive notice beforehand of the price of membership after the first 12 months, so you'll have plenty of time to change or cancel your cover. Free breakdown cover is only available via the call centre. Breakdown cover is subject to terms and conditions.
