The world of campervans is different to other vehicles. For instance, there are coach-built and converted campervans or campervans. The latter is the affordable and low-key version based on popular large vans. Meanwhile, the coach-built campervans come in three types: A-Class (purpose-built campervans), low profile (with no over-cab) and high profile (with high-cab body and extra living space). When buying used, it is important to pick the right campervan based on the number of occupants factoring in the design and layout of the facilities, such as kitchen, bedding, storage and bathroom.
If you don’t need a loads of space and large dimensions, Campervans might be a better alternative as they are smaller and easier to drive and park. There are different kinds of campervans out there such as compact-sized fixed roof campervans, campervans with elevating roof, and high-top campervans based on larger vans for more space. Depending on the space and your specific use case, you can find a used campervan that will finally help you kickstart your van life!
There is a lot of difference between a good campervan/campervan and a bad one, and the thing you should look at first is the quality. This can often be the decider between how much you’ll pay, and providing your budget can stretch, it’s worth paying for a good conversion that feels well done and built to last. However, when selecting a campervan, make sure it’s got all the features you need and try not to splash out on a van with features you’re unlikely to ever use. Key bits to look out for include the kitchen, toilet, seating and whether you want extras like a pop-up roof, along with any technology you want – some of the latest campervans use a smart metre-like touchscreen to control the van’s functions, for example.
Crucially, you need to also consider how many occupants need sleeping space, as this is a quick way of deciding if a campervan or campervan is fit for purpose or not. After this, you should do all the key checks that you normally do on any vehicle – looking at the mechanical bits, look out for any signs of bodywork damage and check all equipment on the vehicle works as it should. Due to the number of things that could go wrong with a campervan/campervan, it’s worth having it mechanically and visually inspected by an expert before buying.
