BYD Sealion 7

Peugeot 508

First launched in 2011, the second-generation Peugeot 508 arrived in 2018, before being given a sharp and modern facelift back in 2023. Peugeot has gone through something of a revival in the last decade and the 508 continued the brand’s pattern of ditching its dull and conservative approach of the Noughties in favour of more eye-catching and interesting design. With its low roofline, frameless doors and dramatic lighting signatures, the 508 was able to stand out among rivals like the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Skoda Superb, even several years after its introduction.

Skoda Kamiq

Recent decades have seen Czech brand Skoda undergo something of an image change. The outfit has transformed public perceptions with a swathe of interesting and funky offerings, especially in the world of SUVs. Sitting below the larger Karoq and Kodiaq, the Kamiq was designed to go up against the likes of the Nissan Juke, Volkswagen T-Cross and Peugeot 2008 in the extremely crowded compact SUV segment. The car shares the same underpinnings as its stablemate – the T-Cross – and benefits from modern safety tech and a range of efficient petrol engines. While it may not be the boldest or most exciting option on the market, it is among the most solid, dependable and well-priced choices in its segment. But is the Kamiq worth considering? Land Rover Discovery Sport

As the baby in the Land Rover line-up, the Discovery Sport has had a key role to play for the historic British brand, ever since it first arrived on our roads way back in 2014. Sitting beneath the standard Discovery and the more off-road focused Defender, the model has long been pitched as a more accessible route into the world of Land Rover ownership. Given an extensive facelift in 2019, the car now competes in the highly congested mid-sized SUV market, which includes rivals like the BMW X3, Audi Q5, Volvo XC60 and Lexus NX. With so much competition, the Discovery Sport has always had to work hard to keep up the pace, but its excellent all-round package, which even includes a seven-seat option, means that it has always been a popular choice.

Alfa Romeo Stelvio

When Alfa Romeo first put the Stelvio on sale back in 2017, it represented something of a gamble for a brand that had built its reputation with stylish saloons and pretty little sports cars. The Stelvio was the outfit’s first attempt to dip its toe into the SUV market, with the Italian manufacturer looking to take on the likes of the BMW X3, Audi Q5 and Mercedes-Benz GLC. While the car has never sold in the same volumes as some of its competitors, it has proved popular with buyers who want an SUV that is still fun to drive. Fans will tell you it is a more interesting and left-field choice than the more established offerings from BMW, Audi and Mercedes, but is it one worth taking?
