The Kia Soul is a reliable, good value small SUV that suits anyone who loves easy access, loads of headroom, and everyday usability that makes life simpler. It offers an upright stance and smart interior, making it easy to park. Since its first generation arrived in 2009, it has evolved with petrol, diesel, and electric options, with post-2019 models in the UK being electric-only. Compared to rivals like the Nissan Juke or Renault Captur, the Soul is roomier, more dependable, features simple controls, a high driving position, and Kia’s long transferable warranty. Its unique look and comfortable cabin remain central to its appeal.
All Kia Souls have standard features like multiple airbags, electronic stability control and seatbelt reminders on every seat. From the 2014 version, you’ll also find improved side and curtain airbags. Isofix child-seat mounts have been fitted from early on, while later cars also added handy touches like an optional speed limiter. However, active driver aids like lane assist or automatic emergency braking are generally missing from most used models.
The Soul’s first generation (2009–2014) came with 1.6-litre petrol and diesel options. The second generation (2014–2019) kept similar 1.6-litre choices but with better refinement and a more efficient diesel. From 2014, the range also included the Soul EV – an all-electric version that added zero-emission driving to its quirky charm.
Entry-level Souls offer air conditioning, DAB radio, Bluetooth, and electric windows. Higher trims add a touch-screen infotainment system, sat nav, climate control, cruise control and parking cameras. Many used Souls, even in modest trim, include straightforward media options that are simple to use.
Official figures for the 1.6-litre petrol Soul (2014–2019) are up to 43.5mpg, while the diesel offers up to 56.5mpg. In everyday driving, you might see slightly lower figures, particularly with petrol models, but they’re still reasonable for the size and shape of the car. Earlier (pre-2014) cars usually return similar numbers.
Check the cabin for family wear, as many Souls have led busy family lives. For 2014–2016 cars, check if a recall for a steering fault has been completed. On diesels, be sure the diesel particulate filter (DPF) is not clogged, particularly if the car has mostly done short journeys. For extra peace of mind, consider using The AA Vehicle Inspection service.
The Kia Soul has a top-drawer reliability record. It's even won awards for it. Kia’s seven-year warranty can transfer to second or third owners, as long as mileage and age limits are respected. Issues don't crop up often, but there was a known steering recall on some models.
