The Kia Niro is purpose-built for drivers who value versatility – whether you're after a regular hybrid, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) for extra range, or an all-electric. First launched in 2016, the Niro has grown steadily in popularity thanks to its blend of practicality, impressive efficiency and a long, confidence-boosting warranty. The second-generation Niro, which arrived in 2022, brought bolder styling and even smarter in-car tech to the line-up. Against rivals such as the Toyota C-HR, Hyundai Ioniq and Renault Captur, the Niro is more understated and often delivers a better combination of space and running costs. All versions are well-equipped – even mid-range trims offer luxuries like heated seats and advanced driver assistance. What really defines the Niro is choice: there’s a version to suit every step of the switch to lower-emission driving.
Every Kia Niro comes with a comprehensive set of safety features. These include multiple airbags, traction control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assist. High-spec models may come with parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. The Niro received high ratings in Euro NCAP tests and even higher marks when fitted with the optional safety pack.
The Niro launched with a 1.6-litre petrol self-charging hybrid, soon joined by a plug-in hybrid with the same engine, and an electric-only e-Niro. The latest (post-2022) Niro continues this mix, with all variants focused on maximising efficiency. There are no diesel versions.
Standard features vary per model, but you can expect to find a touchscreen infotainment system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, satellite navigation and wireless phone charging. Higher trims bring dual-zone climate control, leather seats, keyless entry and premium JBL audio, which spreads an ear-popping eight speakers around the cabin.
The self-charging hybrid Niro averages around 50-60 mpg, depending on year and trim. The plug-in hybrid claims over 200mpg if you charge regularly, while the all-electric e-Niro and Niro EV offer a real-world range of 250+ miles between charges. The actual efficiency varies with driving style and how often you charge the battery.
Look for a full service history and be sure to test all the technology features, as the Niro is well-equipped. Some early models had electrical relay recalls – confirm any dealer checks were completed. Examine the charging port on PHEV and EV versions to ensure connections are clean. For peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection service.
The Kia Niro is widely praised for reliability. Owner surveys put it near the top for trouble-free hybrid and electric motoring. Few faults are reported, and all Niros benefit from Kia's industry-leading seven-year warranty, which may still apply to the car you have in mind.
