Kia Picanto

The Kia Picanto has come a long way since the first generation of the Korean company’s city car arrived in the UK in 2004. Back then, it was a budget contender, but it’s a very different car today; refined, plush and quite high-tech, the latest version of the Picanto is a mature hatchback. The 2023 update brought sharper exterior styling, enhanced connectivity, and improved safety tech, with an engine line-up remaining focused on frugal petrol options. Its main rivals are the Hyundai i10, Volkswagen Up!, Fiat 500, Citroën C1, Peugeot 107 and Toyota Aygo X, with the Kia’s super-low running costs and long warranty making it one of the more appealing options in its class.

Peugeot E-2008

First launched in 2019 and updated in 2023, the Peugeot e-2008 has established itself as one of the more popular compact electric SUVs, with sharp styling, stylish decent practicality and comfort. The most recent version, introduced to the UK market in late 2023, has sharper looks, improved technology, and a more efficient powertrain, moving the model further away from its petrol and diesel siblings. It appeals to drivers looking for an efficient, well-equipped, and attractive alternative to mainstream family SUVs, and is typically priced in line with its rivals, such as the Hyundai Kona Electric, Kia Niro EV, and Renault Megane E-Tech.

Audi Q6 e-tron

When it comes to large, luxurious pure EV crossovers, the Q6 e-tron now sits towards the top of Audi’s electric SUV line-up, positioned between the Q4 e-tron and the larger Q8 e-tron. The Q6 e-tron is based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that it shares with the Porsche Macan Electric, itself a keen rival despite the two hailing from the same Volkswagen Group stable. As a result, it comes with a choice of battery configurations, as well as the ability to specify either single-motor rear-wheel drive or dual-motor quattro all-wheel drive, which ensures there is a broad performance spectrum to consider.

The Tesla Model Y is not only the best-selling vehicle in Tesla's line-up, it has also taken the crown of best selling car in Europe in 2023, shifting 1.2 million units globally the same year. Its popularity is due to its beguiling mix of interior roominess, including one of the largest boots you’ll find anywhere, it’s easy-to-live-with demeanour, very competitive electric range and technological prowess. It’s certainly not the cheapest electric SUV on the market, but Tesla is doing its best to tempt buyers away from rival brands by recently lowering the cost of its entry-level Standard, which now costs just over £40,000.

Peugeot E-208

Peugeot’s 208 supermini struck all of the right chords when it was launched in 2019, packing unmistakably French, futuristic styling with just enough nods to the past to ensure it resonated with fans of the original 205 and other classic hatchbacks from the French marque. What’s more, it arrived as the E-208, the all-electric offering, with two battery options. There is a 50kWh battery (with around 46kWh usable) that delivers up to 226 miles of WLTP range and 136hp, or a larger 51kWh battery (with around 48kWh usable) that increases output to 156hp and extends the WLTP range to a maximum of 268 miles.
