Overall rating 4.5/5The Seat Leon has been one of this Spanish brand’s core models for decades, providing reliable and practical transportation. Throughout the years the Leon - which is based on the same platform as the Volkswagen Golf - has evolved and changed in design but has always maintained a focus on spaciousness and reliability.

Overall rating 4.5/5The Seat Leon is a very popular used car option. It’s great for families because of its well-made yet spacious interior, while equipment levels have been largely good through the various models. Now into its fourth generation, the Seat Leon’s success has come through a great number of engine options and plenty of specifications to choose from.
The Seat Leon has a good track record for reliability, too, while some efficient engines are there to help reduce monthly running costs.

The Seat Leon has been equipped with plenty of safety equipment during its lifetime. Taking the popular third-generation car as an example, it came fitted with a series of airbags and ISOFIX mounting points for child seats in the rear of the vehicle. Built between 2013 and 2020, this generation of Leon was also awarded a full five stars by Euro NCAP when crash tested.
The third-generation Seat Leon came with a variety of engines, including a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre unit, while a later 1.5-litre engine was introduced to bring even better efficiency. A good range of diesel is also available with this car, with 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged engines providing good levels of efficiency and performance.
Air conditioning is one of several standard features aboard the Seat Leon, while more heavily specified SE trim cars add in luxuries such as cruise control to help make longer journeys easier. Look out for cars with additional ‘packs’ - such as ‘technology’ - as these add more useful features such as brighter LED headlights and satellite navigation.
The diesel-powered Leon will be the one for the best possible efficiency, delivering up to 57.6mpg from the smaller 1.6-litre unit. However, the compact petrol engines are still good in this respect, bringing up to 52.3mpg, or 47.9mpg on smaller-engined versions. You’ll find both automatic and manual gearboxes available, too, so there should be a Leon for all types of drivers.
The Seat Leon has a good track-record when it comes to reliability, though some cars have been affected by electrical issues. As a result, we’d recommend testing all the major switches and buttons in a car that you’re looking at to make sure they all work as they should. However, for a more in-depth look at a car, an AA Vehicle Inspection service can provide a greater level of detail about any car that you’re considering of buying.
Drivers report a good level of reliability for their Seat Leons, but for some additional information an AA Vehicle Inspection is a good place to start. With it, a trained technician will take an in-depth look at any car you’re considering and will provide a detailed report highlighting any issues or potential problems with the vehicle.
The Seat Leon has a range of engines spanning from a 1.2-litre through to a 2.0-litre diesel.
