Overall rating 4.5/5The Alhambra was a longstanding member of the Seat family, positioned as the ‘original’ style of family car before SUVs became more popular. With space for seven, the Alhambra is great for larger families and groups, with all those aboard getting plenty of head and legroom. Because of the Alhambra’s practical design, you still get a decent amount of boot space even when all the seats are in place.
The second-generation Alhambra was launched in 2011, and it was this car which saw a lot of success. Well-equipped and comfortable, it was a very appealing family car and one which wasn’t too expensive to run thanks to a range of efficient engines.
The Alhambra incorporates three ISOFIX mounting points for each of the middle rows, meaning that you can fit a trio of child seats in this car. Alongside, the Alhambra gets a range of airbags, and autonomous emergency braking for a number of scenarios - including city driving and ‘interurban’ - which helped it to achieve a full five stars in Euro NCAP’s 2019 testing.
There’s a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine which kicks off the Alhambra range, followed by a 2.0-litre diesel which is available in two states of tune. There’s a six-speed manual gearbox there to choose from, too, while some models have a seven-speed automatic instead.
All versions of the Alhambra get sliding doors as standard which help entering and exiting the car a breeze. Other standard features include climate control, parking sensors at front and rear and electric windows. There’s a compact infotainment system included too.
Diesel versions of the Alhambra are the most fuel-efficient, bringing a claimed consumption of 44.1mpg. The higher-powered diesel still does well at 40.4mpg while the petrol version should return around 36.2mpg combined.
The Seat Alhambra has proven to be largely reliable during its lifespan, though some owners have recorded issues with the air conditioning and media systems - so make sure that both are working properly on any car you’re looking at. Press the buttons to cycle through menus and ensure that the air is blowing cold when switched on. With an AA Vehicle Inspection service, you can get some additional information about a car you’re thinking about buying, too. A trained engineer will take a close look at the vehicle and produce a detailed report on any issues that have been discovered.
Yes, Seat Alhambra vehicles have proven to be reliable aside from electrical gremlins on a few cars. An AA Vehicle Inspection can help to take some of the doubt away from a used-car purchase, too, with a trained specialist there to flag any problems that might have been initially hard to spot on a car you’re considering the purchase of.
The Seat Alhambra is available with engines ranging from a 1.4-litre petrol to a 2.0-litre diesel.
