If you’re buying a used pick-up truck for work, start with the basics: payload, towing, and how you’ll actually use the load bed. Double cabs are popular because they carry people and kit, but they often have a shorter bed than single or extra cabs. Check the plated weights and make sure the payload still works once you’ve added a canopy, toolbox or racking. If you’re buying for a VAT registered business, it’s also worth knowing that HMRC’s VAT approach for double cab pick-ups is based on payload: under 1 tonne is treated as a car and 1 tonne or more is treated as a van, so the exact model spec can matter.
Condition matters more than mileage on many pick-ups because they’re often used for towing, site driving and farm tracks. Look underneath for corrosion, check the chassis rails for dents, and inspect suspension bushes, rear leaf springs and the towbar for heavy wear. On 4x4 models, test the system properly and listen for whining or clunks from the drivetrain.
Think about where you drive too. Large pick-ups can be wide for city streets and multi-storey car parks, and older diesels may not suit low-emission zones. Before you commit, a full-service history and a clean MOT record are key, and an AA inspection can help confirm the pick-up is fit for work.
