Expert Opinion

The 207 brought Parisian chic to UK markets in 2006. Among the UK's Top Ten Best Selling Cars in its first year, the 207 improved on the quality, comfort and performance of its predecessor, the 206. Featuring Peugeot's famous responsive steering and light chassis design, the spacious, sporty hatchback also offers comfortable rear seating for two adults in either three or five door models. Internally, a modern interior includes a display which tells you the most efficient gear for the road conditions. Externally, in 2009, the 207 was given a new front grille and LED rear lights. Look out for the 207, 207 Coupe and 207 Station Wagon. Engines include a 1.4 vti and 1.6 vti Valvetronic engines and their turbocharged siblings, diesels are a 1.4 litre or a 1.6 litre HDi.

About Peugeot 207

Manufactured between 2006 and 2012, the 207 didn't have a very long production run, but it was a successful one. Today it remains a popular used choice for UK drivers due to its affordability, its compact size and nimble handling. Small yet practical, its strengths lie in the fact that it is so economical. While this makes it primarily popular with young and first time drivers, it attracts drivers of all ages due to its good handling and chic style.

Why buy a used 207?

The Peugeot 207 was first launched in 2006 as a replacement for the 206, and looked to significantly improve a car that was a top seller but failed to unanimously impress the critics. With a design that followed a more conventional path than its predecessor, the 207 is not necessarily a car which stands out in a crowd. Instead it is a frugal, nifty runaround, which impresses without always leaving a lasting impression.

One of the biggest improvements the 207 made on the 206 was on the quality of the build. The interior isn't as kitted out with equipment as some of its rivals, but the features it does include are finished to a high standard. Size might be an issue if you're looking for ample luggage space and room for four sizeable travellers, but as a simple A to B car it is more than adequate.

Being on the mini side of the supermini class, performance options don't extend particularly far into the upper ends unless you opt for the GTi option. There are competent 1.4 and 1.6 litre petrol options, while the diesel offers the best mix of performance and economy. All options may be better suited to city driving than out on the motorway, but it remains refined and silent while at high speeds.

What the small engines and limited equipment does means however, is that the 207 is very fuel efficient. The 1.6 litre HDi diesel reportedly can return a class beating 80 miles per gallon, while the 1.4 VTi petrol returns a more conservative 35 to 40 mpg. Unfortunately they don't offer very low CO2 emissions, but they are minimal enough to place it into some of the cheapest road tax bands.

Responsive and smooth steering adds to the improvements of the 207 from the 206. With good grip and smooth suspension, the 207 handles well and offers an impressive ride. Again, it doesn't compete with the leaders in its class, but it is nimble and comfortable enough to give it a lively drive.

While there are no new 207s being manufactured, there are still plenty on the road, which means that you should have a reasonable amount of choice when it comes to buying. While their initial price might not always place them at the very lowest end of the supermini scale, they are certainly one of the most affordable to own and run.

207 updates

Peugeot 207

From its launch in 2006 to its discontinuation in 2012, the 207 has been one of the most popular superminis on the road.

Here's a brief overview of the Peugeot 207's six year history, starting in 2006.

  • The first Peugeot 207 was launched in 2006 and was the successor to the 206. Initially it was offered coming with three petrol engines, in either three door or five door models.
  • A limited range of the 207 RCup, a sportier model 207 was launched at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, and featured a 2.0 litre petrol engine.
  • A cabriolet version of the 207 was released in 2007 to much acclaim, and contributed to the car's success that year.
  • In 2007 the 207 was sixth best selling car in the UK, a position it remained in during the following two years, before dropping to seventh in 2010.
  • The 207 was given a facelift in 2009 which brought it up to date with the redesigned 307. This largely included a redesign of the grille.
  • In 2012 the 207 was replaced by the Peugeot 208.

What should I look for when buying a used 207?

Peugeots are fairly reliable, but make sure to inspect for some of these common faults in order to walk away with a bargain.

What to look for in a Peugeot 207
  • Inspect the outside of the car, looking for rust and corrosion. Pay particular attention to the bottom of the front bumper as it can commonly grind on speed bumps and curbs due to its low overhang.
  • Make sure the windscreen wipers are working properly. In 207s they either work perfectly or not at all, so it is important you check this before driving away with anything.
  • Check that the windscreen is secure by pushing it lightly. Some 207s have been known to develop problems with the windscreen clips which could cause them to come loose.
  • Some 207s have reported problems with their alternators. To check this, leave the engine running and switch on all electrics (radio, air conditioning, lights). If after ten to fifteen minutes they fail, followed by the car stopping, this would mean the alternator needs to be replaced.
  • Make sure to check for anything out of the ordinary under the bonnet. If there is any oil seeping down the side of the engine it would mean that the head gasket is faulty and will need replacing.
  • On cars with turbo engines make sure to check for any blue or black smoke coming from the exhaust, or any crunching sounds coming from the engine when driving. This would indicate that the turbo has blown and will need to be replaced (the EGR valve will need to be replaced at the same time).
  • Some 207s suffer from gear linkage problems brought on by incorrect alignment settings. This will make changing out of 5th gear into either a lower or neutral position very difficult, and can only be rectified by manually aligning the linkages.
