A supermini is larger than a city car, and so it offers more space and comfort. However, they are not as expensive as a family hatchback, making them perfect for both needs – city use and as a family hatchback. A middle ground, of sorts, but with the good bits from both the segments. Superminis are cheap to buy and run without compromising so much on space and equipment. Some uber-popular superminis are the Ford Fiesta, Hyundai i20, Volkswagen Polo, and the Renault Clio.
They are affordable with small engines with good manoeuvrability and practicality. Modern superminis also offer a plethora of safety features, making them safer than the smaller city cars. Used superminis are plenty in the market with various options from many well-known carmakers. The only downside to a supermini is the reduced space and performance in comparison to bigger and more powerful hatchbacks. If these two can be overlooked, there are not many body styles out there that offer better value for your hard-earned money!
Not only are superminis some of the most varied cars on the market, but they are also some of the most reliable. Thanks to their popularity and abundance, repairs and new part bills are generally on the affordable side. There are also exceptions, but generally, they are affordable to buy and run, new or used.
Most superminis are petrol-powered, but if you do lots of miles a diesel could be worth looking for, and they’re efficient by class standards. But look out for troublesome diesel engines that are old and require more maintenance. Apart from this, a good service history, a clean MOT history and signs of any visible damage or corrosion should be indicative of a supermini’s overall health.
With many superminis being used as town and city cars, it's worth having a particular look for parking damage, such as dings and dents, along with kerbed wheels that can be expensive to fix.
The supermini remains one of the most popular car classes on the road, a fact that owes itself to a near-perfect mix of economy, practicality and driving ability. Some of the top sellers on the market manage to offer all three, making it a great choice of car for drivers after a solid all-rounder small car. Whether looking for something to take to work, to transport the family, or as a quick and simple runaround, there are superminis to satisfy every driver.
Speaking of driving, these cars are typically fun behind the wheel, feeling light, agile and involving, and can be enjoyed at sensible speeds. Increasingly, superminis are being fitted with high-end features that were once reserved for far more expensive vehicles, while some cars (the Skoda Fabia and Honda Jazz, for example) offer plenty of room as well. Due to the supermini's popularity, there is no shortage of choices for sale, either.
In the supermini class, there is a large amount of variety. From the impressive practicality of some of the larger cars (such as the Jazz and Fabia we've mentioned) on the market to economical variants and hot hatchbacks featuring larger engines, there's an option to suit every driver.
So, the real question you need to ask yourself is: "What do I want from my supermini?" Do you want low running costs or driving fun? If fun is a must, a Seat Ibiza and Ford Fiesta are two particularly good choices where enjoyment is concerned.
The fact many superminis are bought as urban cars lend themselves very well to electrification, with an increasing number of hybrid and electric models on the market. They will typically be newer, however, and therefore more expensive to buy.Hybrid superminis include the Honda Jazz, Renault Clio and Toyota Yaris, while if you want an EV, the Mini Electric, Renault Zoe Vauxhall Corsa-e are all appealing choices.
You might think that because superminis are smaller they compromise on safety. Generally, however, this isn't the case, with these smaller cars engineered to be just as safe.If you’re buying a newer model, it will be fitted with aids that can keep you in your lane and even prevent collisions through autonomous emergency braking. If safety is a particular priority, it's worth looking at some of the latest superminis, which will be safer than older examples.
A supermini is a type of body style that sits between a city car and a larger family hatchback. Superminis offer good value for money, and some of the most popular and best-selling cars in the UK are superminis.
The Renault Clio has one of the biggest boots in the supermini segment. It offers a massive 391-litre boot which is much larger than most of its competition and even comparable to some mid-size hatchbacks. The Seat Ibiza and Honda Jazz are the other superminis with a boot space of around 350 litres.
The Volkswagen Polo is the safest supermini car, known for its high crash test ratings, and above-average adult occupant protection.
The Toyota GR Yaris is the fastest supermini. It is a rally homologation special with a turbocharged three-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. Other fast superminis are the Fiesta ST, Polo GTI, and the Hyundai i20N.
