Launched in 1999, the BMW X Series covers a range of premium SUVs, from the more compact X1 up to the huge X7. Each model brings the manufacturer's focus on strong performance, top-notch safety and upmarket interiors. While the X1 and X3 suit small families or city drivers, the X5 is a favourite for those needing space and serious comfort. Every X model feels sharper to drive than rivals such as the Audi Q range, yet they keep road noise low and the drive smooth, especially the newer generations. Technology and safety gear have improved with each update, but even older used models offer plenty for the money. Owners highlight interior space, strong diesels and advanced driver assistance technology as some of the main draws.
The BMW X Series is well-equipped for safety, with Euro NCAP rating many X models highly for crash protection. Across the range, you’ll find multiple airbags, stability control, anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX points as standard. Later models add automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and more advanced features like steering and lane control assist.
Engine choice depends on each model and generation. The X1 and X3 focus on efficient four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, with some punchier six-cylinder diesels available in later years. The X5 adds more powerful diesels, V8 petrol options and plug-in hybrid choices, with a four-wheel drive option.
Most recent X Series models include BMW’s iDrive infotainment system with Bluetooth, sat-nav and voice control. Higher trims add a bigger screen, parking cameras, smartphone integration and advanced navigation features. The newest cars no longer have rotary dials to control the touchscreen, which can make things a little fiddly.
Fuel economy varies by model and engine. Expect 35 to 55mpg from four-cylinder diesels (the X1 and X3 are the most frugal), about 30 to 40mpg from six-cylinder diesels and even lower figures from V8 petrols. Plug-in hybrid X models show impressive official numbers (around 150 to 235 mpg) if you mostly charge and drive short trips. Real-world results depend on use.
Check for a full service history (especially for oil changes and auto gearbox servicing) and look out for warning lights or electrical faults, which can affect older models. Make sure infotainment, safety tech and the four-wheel drive system all work as they should. For extra peace of mind, look into The AA Vehicle Inspection to spot hidden issues.
Overall, the X Series is as robust as most premium SUVs, but some older models have reported electrical niggles, infotainment faults and costly repairs for complex suspension and engines. Later models tend to fare better. But regular care means most X Series owners enjoy dependable motoring in the long term.
