Overall rating 4/5The Vauxhall GTC is a three-door hatchback designed to add flair to the Astra range. Produced from 2011 to 2018, it stood apart with its sporty design and more dynamic handling, thanks to suspension technology adapted from Vauxhall’s performance models. It was rebranded from 'Astra GTC' to simply 'GTC' in 2014, but retained the same strengths: bold styling, engaging cornering and a range of petrol and diesel engines. Matching up to rivals like the Volkswagen Scirocco and Renault Mégane Coupé, the GTC impresses for value and driving appeal, with models ranging from efficient diesels to lively petrols, suitable for both daily commuting and weekend fun.
The Vauxhall GTC has ABS brakes, multiple airbags, traction control and full electronic stability control (ESP) as standard. ISOFIX mounts make fitting child seats straightforward. On later, higher trims you may also get hill‑start assist and lane‑departure warning.
The GTC offers a mix of petrol and diesel engines. Petrol engines include 1.4-, 1.6- and 2.0-litre turbocharged units, while diesels range from the efficient 1.7 CDTi to the punchy 2.0 CDTi – some with ecoFLEX badging for lower emissions. The top-of-the-range VXR adds a performance edge for enthusiast drivers.
Most models include essentials like air-conditioning, cruise control and electric windows. Higher-spec trims often add touchscreen infotainment, Bluetooth, DAB radio and USB ports. If you’re looking for more, satnav and parking sensors are common on SRi, Limited Edition or VXR versions.
Diesel variants can achieve up to 62.8mpg combined (1.7 CDTi models), while a 2.0 CDTi still manages a competitive 58.9mpg combined. Petrol models typically return between 35–47mpg, depending on engine and driving style. Real-world figures can dip under WLTP testing, especially when driving harder or in traffic.
Always check for a full service history. Test tyres, brakes, clutch and suspension – GTCs can be used enthusiastically. Make sure all dashboard lights clear correctly and technology features work, especially infotainment and parking sensors. Booking The AA Vehicle Inspection gives real peace of mind before you buy.
The GTC shares much of its engineering with the Astra, so it benefits from proven, well-supported components. Owners report good reliability overall, though ageing suspension and electrical issues can pop up. Keeping up with regular servicing and treating it well in use means you’ll find a dependable companion on the road.
