Overall rating 5/5Launched in the UK in 2012 and sold until 2015, the Ampera was Vauxhall’s bold step into electrification. Its 1.4-litre petrol engine doesn’t drive the wheels directly, but works as a generator once the battery (good for around 30-40 miles real-world) is depleted, extending the total range to around 300 miles. This makes the Ampera especially useful if you need flexibility for both city and motorway miles. Against rivals like the BMW i3 and Toyota Prius Plug-in, the Ampera offers a unique balance. While it doesn’t go as far on electric alone as a pure EV, its petrol generator means you don’t have to worry about running flat. All models are well equipped, with top trims featuring heated leather seats, sat nav, BOSE audio and more. The only drawback is the strict four-seat layout due to the central battery tunnel. But if you're looking for a practical, family-friendly hatchback with a futuristic edge, you won't go wrong with the Ampera.
