The MG ZT came with a good set of safety features for its day, including multiple airbags, ABS and traction control. Later models have improved crash structures and safety measures. The engines are the same in saloon and estate versions of the ZT, and they include a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol, a 2.5-litre V6 petrol, a 4.6-litre V8, and a highly regarded 2.0-litre diesel. The diesel offers the best blend of economy and flexibility.

The ZT was well equipped for its time, typically offering climate control, electric windows, remote locking and decent stereos as standard. Higher trims can include leather seats, cruise control and upgraded audio – though keep in mind that the infotainment will feel basic by modern standards.

Fuel consumption varies depending on engine choice and driving style. Expect an official figure of around 21–48 mpg across the range, though V6 and V8 models are notably less economical in real-world use, while diesel models tend to be more frugal.
