The Alfa Romeo GT is a coupe that balances style with real-world usability. It was launched in 2004 and ran through to 2010, sharing its platform with the Alfa 156 but wearing a unique look. Many enjoy its sharp handling, ample boot space and engaging engines, especially the diesel. Compared to rivals like the Volkswagen Scirocco and Peugeot 407 Coupe, the GT marks itself out by looking charismatic and being more reliable than other Alfas. Its elegant lines and responsive steering give it a unique charm, while 2+2 seating means you can have fun and carry passengers comfortably. A smart dashboard makes the interior feel refined, many options come with leather seats and the GT offers good standard equipment for its age.

Many models feature Alfa's Vehicle Dynamic Control traction control. While the GT isn't as advanced as newer cars, you get enough kit to inspire confidence for daily driving.
The GT comes with a choice of petrol engines in the UK, including a 1.8-litre and a 2.0-litre. A lively but inefficient 3.2-litre V6 was phased out in 2008. Strong torque and decent fuel economy make the 1.9 JTDm diesel especially popular.
Most GTs include air conditioning, alloy wheels, remote locking and CD audio as standard. Higher trims feature climate control and upgraded stereos. Bluetooth and modern touchscreens were not available from the factory, so check for any upgrades.
The standout option for efficiency is the 1.9-litre JTDm diesel, returning over 40mpg. The 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre petrol engines are thirstier, delivering 28-35mpg depending on driving style. If you find a 3.2-litre V6, you can expect low 20s.
Finding a used GT with a full service history is a good place to start. Look for signs of electrical faults and check the gearbox for any stiffness. Watch for clutch or suspension wear and inspect the bodywork for rust. Front spoilers and alloys commonly show damage, so take a look at those. While Alfa Romeo scores poorly for reliability, the GT has a more solid record. The diesel engine is robust, though electrical niggles can pop up. Regular servicing and previous careful ownership are key – treat yours well and it’ll likely reward you with dependable motoring.
