Overall rating 4.5/5Dynamic performance and interior comfort make this a car for those who value practicality but want to stand out. The Alfa Romeo Giulia is designed for drivers who want something more design-focused than the usual German four-door saloons, without giving up functionality. Since its launch in 2016, the Giulia has built a loyal fan base thanks to its lively driving experience, agile steering and elegant looks. While it’s often compared to market-leading alternatives like the BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 and Jaguar XE, the Giulia’s sharper handling and Italian flair set it apart. Post-2020 models benefit from interior quality upgrades and more advanced safety features, making later versions a sounder bet for everyday family use. All versions feature an eight-speed automatic gearbox, with trims including Lusso, Veloce and Quadrifoglio.
All Giulias come with a strong set of safety features, including autonomous emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. In 2016, the Giulia scored a full five stars in Euro NCAP testing, achieving 98% for adult-occupant protection.
2016 models come with petrol and diesel engines. These include a 2.0-litre petrol that delivers 197bhp or 276bhp, as well as a 2.2-litre diesel with power up to 180bhp. The high-performance Quadrifoglio from this era boasts a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6. Cars with 2022 plates or later are most likely to have the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol turbo.
Later Giulias are equipped with an 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which also offers rotary dial control for easier use while driving. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with DAB radio and Bluetooth. The most modern models gain a digital dash and upgraded graphics.
The best fuel economy comes from the older diesel versions that offer up to 53.3mpg. The 2.0-litre petrol typically manages between 33 and 37mpg. The high-performance Quadrifoglio is naturally thirstier, achieving an official figure around 27mpg.
Look for a full service history and verify that any recall work has been completed. Check for paint repairs and kerb damage on the alloys. Ensure that all features work properly, especially the infotainment screen and electronics, as owners have reported issues with these. For peace of mind, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Reliability is where the Giulia trails some rivals. In the 2024 What Car? Reliability Survey of executive cars, it was ranked 17th out of 20. Common concerns include electrics, batteries and suspension. Alfa Romeo's warranty and repair cover help, but it's worth being aware of these issues before buying.
