Euro NCAP awarded the Tonale a full five stars. Key safety features include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, traffic sign recognition, and a driver attention alert. All models get parking sensors and a reversing camera, while higher trims offer a rear-view camera for easier manoeuvring.

The Tonale engine range starts with a front-wheel-drive 1.5-litre mild-hybrid petrol (160hp). There is also a plug-in hybrid using a 1.3-litre petrol engine and a larger battery, with four-wheel drive and 280hp. Both have automatic gearboxes with six or seven speeds, according to which model you choose. As yet, there are no diesel or fully electric Tonales.

A 10.25-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard on every Tonale. There’s also a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, Amazon Alexa voice assistant and wireless phone charging. All trims feature dual-zone climate control and keyless start. Look out for models with a Harman Kardon sound system if top-quality sound is important to you.

Official economy for the 1.5 mild-hybrid Tonale is around 45–50mpg, dependent on wheel size and trim. The plug-in hybrid can achieve over 200mpg in official tests, but real-world figures depend on regular charging. With the battery depleted, the PHEV manages around 32–35mpg.

Check that all hybrid functions and driver-assistance features are in working order. Software updates may be available for the infotainment system. The Tonale is a new model, so long-term reliability data is still limited. However, Alfa Romeo’s brand ranking is below average according to recent owner surveys, sitting 30th out of 31 manufacturers. All Tonales come with a three-year, unlimited mileage warranty.
