First launched in the 1960s, it gained timeless status after starring in The Graduate. UK drivers most often find later-generation Spiders, built from 1995 up until 2010. The final versions produced from 2007 to 2010 brought modern engines and improved reliability. Against rivals like the Audi TT Roadster and BMW Z4, the Spider delivers unique flair, a smart, retro-inspired cabin and the option of petrol or diesel power. The diesel engine is a welcome rarity among convertibles. Today, it stands out for its elegant lines, distinctive badge and attention to detail, both inside and out. Any fan of sports-car driving will find it hard to resist putting the top down and listening to the roar of the V6.

UK models from 2007–2010 offer several engines, including a 2.2-litre petrol and a 3.2-litre V6 that boosts performance, as well as a less common 2.4-litre diesel. Running costs depend on your engine – expect around 28–35mpg for most petrols and up to 40mpg for the 2.4-litre diesel, though real-world numbers may differ. Higher-performance V6 models are thirstier, especially around town, which is something to keep in mind if you're a regular city driver.
Check for electrical faults, worn suspension and roof mechanism issues. Rust can appear on older models, especially around the floors. The AA Vehicle Inspection is especially useful for classic Spiders, to spot any hidden trouble early and give new owners peace of mind.
Later Spider models saw better reliability and improved dealer service, but you may still encounter the odd niggle with electronics or minor trim. Regular maintenance and attentive ownership are key to enjoying a low-stress Spider experience.
