Smart started selling cars back in 2000, entering the UK market with its range of urban-focused cars that had a quirky design, which looked to maximise space in a car with a very small footprint. Famously, it could park nose-in to a roadside space and still occupy the same width as a vehicle parked lengthwise.
In 2019, Smart announced that it would be going completely electric as a business. That started with battery-powered versions of its ForTwo and ForFour models, but has quickly evolved into more modern, tech-heavy examples which are on sale today.
The latest Smart models come equipped with a range of cutting-edge safety features. The new #1 achieved a five-star safety rating when tested in 2021 by Euro NCAP, with key bits of tech including lane keep assistance and automatic emergency braking helping to contribute to this score. Older models, like the ForTwo, are also extremely safe given their size. A clever ‘Tridion’ safety cell helps to dissipate energy created during a crash, maintaining a secure ‘cell’ in the middle for occupants.
All of the latest Smart models are electric, which means that they’re able to offer some very good levels of efficiency. The #1, for instance, can deliver a range of over 270 miles from a single charge. If you’re able to access cheaper home charging, then running a Smart car should be a very cost-effective form of motoring.
Early examples of Smart’s famous ForTwo cars can be picked up for £1,800 with relatively high mileage, and it’s the same story for the more practical ForFour hatchback. Prices for the sportier Roadster start from around £6,000, too. At the more modern end of the spectrum, prices for the #1 start from £21,700, or £21,215 for the #3.
Since 2019 Smart’s line-up has been entirely electric. The latest battery-powered models that it offers include the #1, which has a range of up to 270 models. This compact electric car is also available in high-performance Brabus guise, which uses dual electric motors. There’s also the larger and more practical #3, which comes with a range of up to 283 miles from a single charge.
Smart cars have always been relatively simple in design, which bodes well for reliability. However, given that the popular ForTwo is mainly used around town, it could be susceptible to parking damage or other low-speed prangs. The current range of Smart cars is too new to determine reliability, though with fewer moving parts than a conventional petrol or diesel car, these electric models should prove reliable.
Early Smart cars are mainly used around town, so make sure that they haven’t been involved in dings or scrapes. We’d also do a history check to check that any car you’re looking at hasn’t been previously written-off, too. You could consider an AA Vehicle Inspection, too. With this service, we’ll provide a trained engineer to come and look at the car before providing a detailed report highlighting their findings.
Yes. If you’d like a greater level of analysis about any car you’re considering the purchase of, then an AA Vehicle Inspection can definitely help.
Smart vehicles are not currently available to lease via AA Cars.
