Owner reviews for the Mazda 2

Overall rating 4/5Mazda knows a thing or two about making small, reliable models and the 2 is a great example of this. It’s a compact hatchback designed to offer lots of space, as well as a great level of efficiency. While much of the limelight goes to cars like the MX-5, the 2 has remained a core part of Mazda’s line-up for a long time, which is why you’ll be able to find plenty of examples on AA Cars today.

Core to the Mazda 2 experience is its solid build quality. Unlike many rivals within the compact hatchback segment, the 2 offers a premium experience thanks to good materials and solid ergonomics, which help to make this car feel a cut above the rest. It’s also backed up by some very efficient engines and plenty of standard equipment, which should make this car a very tempting second-hand purchase.
The Mazda 2 was first launched in 2015 and even though that is a little while ago now, it still has enough safety equipment to remain competitive. There are front and side airbags to help protect all occupants and you’ll find Isofix child seat mounting points on the rear outer seats. There’s a full electronic stability control system to help keep things on the straight and narrow, too.
Early versions of the Mazda 2 were available with a 1.4-litre diesel engine, though this was phased out shortly after. Most of the models you’ll find for sale have a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre petrol engine, available with a series of mild-hybrid option as well as a base non-hybrid setup. There are five- and six-speed manual gearboxes available, though an automatic is also there to choose from for those who need it.
Facelifted models - made from 2015 onwards - are a good option because they bring plenty of equipment. Even base SE models get features such as air conditioning and a CD player, alongside front electric windows. Step up to SE L specification and you’ll get features such as heated mirrors, cruise control and electric rear windows. There’s a broad range of specifications, mind you, so there should be something for all budgets.
Early diesel models could return a claimed 83.1mpg, though these figures were generated under older NEDC tests. It should still prove very fuel-efficient during mixed driving, however. Lower-powered 1.5-litre petrol engines will return in the region of 58mpg, with the middle-powered engine delivering around 60mpg. The most powerful model will still return around 56mpg.
With its popularity among city drivers and first-time motorists, the 2 is prone to low-speed damage so check its bumpers for scrapes and bad repairs, as well as the wheels for any kerbing. If you need a more in-depth picture of a car you’re looking to buy, then an AA Vehicle Inspection can help. A trained engineer will take a look at the car and flag any potential issues via a full report.
One area where the Mazda 2 performs particularly well is reliability. Drivers report having very few issues with their cars, with routine servicing helping to keep 2 cars on the road for many miles. Again, if you have any concerns about a car you’re looking at, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection for more clarity prior to purchase.
The Mazda 2 is available with 1.4-litre diesel engines and 1.5-litre petrol engines.
