Overall rating 3/5The Chevrolet Kalos is a practical small hatchback that stands out for being budget-friendly, easy to drive and cost-effective to keep on the road. Designed for affordable, hassle-free motoring, it is best suited to city streets and short trips. Sold in the UK from 2005 to 2008, it replaced the Daewoo Kalos and paved the way for the Chevrolet Aveo. Though not the most refined or sporty supermini, it offers good equipment as standard and very reasonable prices for new and used models, with engine options ranging from 1.2 to 1.4-litre petrols and trims like S, SE, SX, and Sport. It is practical for solo drivers and small families, meeting day-to-day needs economically.
Every Chevrolet Kalos comes with driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes and ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Higher trims add side airbags and remote central locking. While the Kalos meets basic safety needs for a car of its age, newer superminis have improved crash protection.
The Kalos range includes a 1.2-litre petrol with 70bhp and a 1.4-litre petrol with 92bhp. The 1.2 is frugal and suitable for city use, while the 1.4 offers more flexibility for dual carriageways. Manual gearboxes are standard, and some 1.4s have a 4-speed automatic.
All but the base trims get a CD player and front electric windows. Mid and upper trims often include air conditioning, electric mirrors, remote central locking and even alloy wheels or parking sensors. Tech is modest by today’s standards but was generous for its price point at launch.
Expect 39–44mpg for the 1.2-litre and around 40mpg for the 1.4 manual models. The automatic 1.4 returns around 39mpg. Real-world figures depend on driving style and upkeep, but running costs remain low.
Look for a complete service history and check for rust, especially around wheel arches and the underside. Interiors can feel worn and plastics may rattle, so inspect for trim damage. Confirm airbags, electrics and air conditioning work properly. The AA Vehicle Inspection is a practical investment for peace of mind.
Overall reliability is fair for an older supermini. Most engines are simple and durable with regular servicing. Watch for minor electrical issues and worn suspension on higher-mileage cars. Parts remain affordable, supporting budget-friendly ownership.
