Overall rating 4.5/5The Ssangyong Rexton is built for both heavy-duty work and everyday life. This seven-seat SUV has the muscle for towing and off-road use with the comfort, tech and huge boot space – especially in five-seat mode – you'll want for family trips. Recent models (2017 onwards) give you refined interiors, up-to-date infotainment and plenty of safety features. Earlier Rextons (2014–2017), known as the "Rexton W", are similarly rugged, but with fewer creature comforts. Compared to rivals like the Kia Sorento and Hyundai Santa Fe, the Rexton wins hands-down on price-for-space and towing ability, though you'll have to compromise on the ride quality and handling. Still, today's Rexton is true value for drivers who want robust performance and loads of kit for their money.
The Ssangyong Rexton comes with a comprehensive set of safety features. You'll get autonomous emergency braking, lane departure and speed limit warnings and hill-start assist. Front and rear parking sensors are also standard. Higher trims add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alerts.
You can have any engine you want, as long as it's diesel. The latest Rexton (2018 onwards) has a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel with around 200 bhp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox – powerful but noisy. Earlier versions also have a diesel, but with less power.
All recent used Rextons have an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system (larger on Ultimate trims) with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and dual-zone air conditioning. Flagship versions feature heated and ventilated front seats, premium Nappa leather and enhanced navigation from TomTom.
The Rexton's large size means fuel consumption is modest. You can expect between 32 and 35 mpg, depending on model specification and your driving style. The Ssangyong Rexton also has high CO2 emissions for its class, so it's worth checking road tax and company car costs.
Check for a full service history and that all tech features are working correctly. The engine build is sound and there have been no recent recalls, so you shouldn't encounter any mechanical issues. But for added peace of mind, consider booking The AA Vehicle Inspection.
The Ssangyon Rexton shares key components with the Musso pickup, so they are tough and designed for demanding use. Owners praise the Rexton's reliability record, and there have been no recalls since the current model's 2017 launch. Look after it and it's likely to serve you well for years.
