With a good road network, Tyne and Wear is well connected to it's surroundings, and the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland are well linked to major road networks. The most famous of these are arguably the A1 or A167, which both pass under the watchful eyes of the iconic Angel of the North in Gateshead. Once a centre for shipbuilding and coal mining, the area is now more well known for it's football teams, shopping and culture.
