Reading
Reading is a thriving town at the heart of Berkshire, well connected by the M4, A33 and A329(M). Drivers here face a mix of busy roads, tight town-centre parking and leafy residential areas. Traffic builds quickly in the morning and evening, especially around the station and nearby business parks – so nippy or compact cars are handy for weaving through queues and squeezing into a space. Heavy industry may have faded, but Reading still takes air quality seriously. While there’s no Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), the council has proposed future changes to parking charges based on your car’s emissions. These plans are under consultation, but if approved, the less your car pollutes, the less you'll pay to park. Worth bearing in mind if you're considering an older diesel or higher-emitting model. Reading’s weather is usually mild – little snow, plenty of rain – so visibility and tyres that grip really count. Hybrids and small hatchbacks are popular, but don’t rule out a fully electric car. Reading Borough Council has secured major funding to expand EV charging across the borough, with thousands of on-street charge points planned and rollout expected from late 2025. It’s a positive move that makes electric driving more practical, whether you’re heading to the shops, school run or countryside escapes.
