Overall rating 5/5Lexus is well known for its futuristic take on things and this came through to the SUV segment in 2014 when it launched the NX. While Lexus may have made premium-feeling SUVs before, the NX marked a move towards a more mainstream area of the car spectrum, going up against rivals like the BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

When launched in 2015, the Lexus NX opened a brand new age for the Japanese brand. Not only was the NX available with a hybrid powertrain to go with more traditional petrol-based setups, but it also focused on practicality and spaciousness, all tied together in a car which looked far more futuristic than the competition.
Today, the NX makes for an excellent used buy owing to its strong reliability record and its high level of standard equipment which ensures that the NX still feels upmarket today. With lots of in-car technology - including a clever mouse-style control for the infotainment - the Lexus NX is a great option for drivers after a somewhat left-field option.
The first-generation Lexus NX comes packed with safety-boosting technology, including a raft of airbags and electronic stability control. It’s worth taking a close look at the model you’re looking at, too, as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) was offered as an option but not standard on all models, so you’ll need to double-check if it has been fitted or not. When tested by Euro NCAP in 2014 the Lexus NX recorded a full five-star rating, which really does reflect its safety levels.
There are just two engine options available for the NX. Earlier models could be specified with a standard 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol providing an entry point to the range. It’s accompanied by an automatic gearbox. However, the vast majority of second-hand NX models will be fitted with the more popular hybrid 2.5-litre engine, which brings added electrification for lower running costs. It’s a ‘regular’ hybrid, too, so you don’t need to plug it in.
Standard equipment on the Lexus NX is good, with base-spec S models getting dual-zone climate control and satellite navigation among a broad range of standard features. Luxury trim is great for that premium feeling as it adds leather seats. However, F-Sport remained a popular choice for the NX as it includes a more dynamic exterior design and LED headlights. F-Sport Premier builds on this with an upgraded sound system and head-up display, to name just two features.
Expect to get in the region of 35.8mpg combined for the standard petrol NX, though this figure is generated under older and less stringent NEDC tests. The hybrid is better, however, with a figure of 55.9mpg being generated under the NEDC testing system.
The Lexus has a good track record for reliability, but it’s still a good idea to check over some key areas. Most cars come with large alloy wheels which are prone to damage, so look for any kerbing to the rims. Likewise, this SUV is a popular choice for around-town drivers, so make sure that there aren’t any scuffs or scrapes on the corners. However, if you want a more in-depth picture about an NX that you’re looking at, consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. A trained engineer will take a look at the car and provide a detailed report highlighting their findings.
One thing that the Lexus NX can really offer is reliability. In fact, the NX has routinely topped reliability surveys, with owners reporting very few faults with their cars. However, the hybrid system is complex and there are lots of electronics aboard, so an AA Vehicle Inspection can help to make sure that you won’t have any issues with these areas.
The Lexus NX is available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.5-litre hybrid system.
