But one of the best additions has been the T-Cross, VW's most affordable SUV that sits slap bang in the middle of the Polo and Golf for price. Bringing fun styling and plenty of personalisation options, the T-Cross is also practical and scores particularly well when it comes to safety.

About Volkswagen T-Cross

It was the Nissan Juke that helped to establish the compact crossover segment in 2010, and ever since then, this market has continued to grow. It's a class that the majority of mainstream manufacturers now compete in, and is a segment that is particularly popular with today's car buyers.

Though Volkswagen might have been a later addition to the party with its T-Cross in 2019, it proved to be worth the wait, quickly becoming a big seller for the firm. Launched with a trio of petrol engines, Volkswagen has more recently launched a diesel option for higher-mileage drivers, as well as a more powerful 1.5-litre petrol option.

Why buy a used T-Cross?

Think buying a compact SUV needs to bring practicality compromises? Well, you'll be pleasantly surprised with the Volkswagen T-Cross as it offers a true 'big car in a little package' feel. It's noticeably smaller in terms of dimensions than a Golf, yet is just as practical, if not more so. As standard it comes with sliding rear seats, letting you alter between more boot or rear headroom, depending on what you needs. With the seats as forward as they go, it opens up an impressive 455 litres of boot space, increasing to 1,281 litres when the seats are folded. This is well ahead of what many rivals in this class offer.

The T-Cross is also a popular choice with families, and it's easy to see why when you consider its safety attributes. When testing in 2019 by Euro NCAP, this VW was awarded a five-star safety rating, and the level of driver assistance technology included is seriously impressive - such as adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring and a fatigue monitoring system for the driver.

Though a car's styling can divide opinion, the T-Cross's funky looks really help it to stand out from the crowd. There are some fantastic colours available, such as Makena Turquoise and Energetic Orange, while the chunky design of the T-Cross gives it that rugged look that is popular with buyers in this class.

Though no hybrid or electric option is available on the T-Cross, it's still offered with a great range of petrol engines, with the turbocharged 1.0-litre TSI unit being particularly appealing with its combination of efficiency and performance making it a very good all-rounder. If you want a bit more pace, the 148bhp 1.5-litre is noticeably brisker, and is able to take the T-Cross to 60mph in 8.3 seconds.

Here’s a short history of the Volkswagen T-Cross, which dates back to 2018.

Volkswagen announced in 2018 that it would launch a smaller crossover, sitting beneath the T-Roc.
The production model, the T-Cross, arrived the following spring, bringing impressive levels of safety and practicality for what is quite a compact crossover.
Changes to the T-Cross included the addition of a short-lived diesel later in 2019, and a range-topping 1.5-litre petrol engine in 2020.
For 2021, Volkswagen introduced a Black Edition model, bringing a stealthier look and more standard equipment.
