First released in 1999 as a rebadged, fourth-generation Jetta, the Volkswagen Bora was produced with the aim of competing in the compact exec class, and was primed to tackle the supremacy of their fellow Germans' BMW 3 Series. While it hasn't quite reached that level of excellence, it remains a competent saloon, which is more of a scaled-up Golf than a true 3 Series rival. As a result there is plenty to admire - the interior is finished with quality materials, on the road it is assured and refined, and its run costs make it easy on the wallet. It might not be as dynamic as some of its rivals - nor as desirable - but there's plenty to attract in a car with as much calm confidence and quality.
