Overall rating 3.5/5The BMW Z-Series is built for road enjoyment. From the original Z3 of the 1990s to the sharper, more modern Z4, it’s always been about confident handling, sporty engines and wind-in-your-hair motoring. Later Z4s introduced a folding metal roof, offering extra insulation and practical usability. You’ll find the BMW Z-Series up against rivals like the Porsche Boxster and Audi TT Roadster – but it often edges ahead for comfort, price and long-distance cruising. Inside, expect a well-finished cabin and solid tech, especially on newer models. The Z3 (1997–2003) is now a modern classic, while the Z4 spans several generations, with the 2009–2017 era offering a great mix of engines, comfort and kit. Whether you go retro or modern, you’ll get a convertible that makes everyday drives feel special.
All BMW Z-Series models come with essentials like ABS, traction control and multiple airbags. From 2009 onwards, Z4s added more advanced kit, including electronic stability control, dynamic brake assist and built-in rollover protection for extra reassurance. If you’re looking at a second-generation Z4 (with the folding metal roof), you’ll also benefit from added security and insulation compared with the earlier soft-top.
If you’re looking at the latest BMW Z4 (G29), you’ll find a straightforward engine range. The sDrive20i and sDrive30i use a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, offering a balance of efficiency and sporty punch. At the top of the line, the M40i packs a 3.0-litre turbocharged six-cylinder for serious performance. All versions are rear-wheel drive and come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, so whichever you choose, you’ll get that classic BMW roadster feel.
Earlier BMW Z-Series models are more basic, with manual air con and standard radios. Post-2011 Z4s get more tech as standard – think Bluetooth, DAB, parking sensors and BMW’s iDrive infotainment with sat nav on higher trims.
Four-cylinder BMW Z4s can return up to 41.5mpg (official combined figure), while six-cylinder models average around 31mpg. Real-world economy varies – if you tend to drive with spirit, expect a little less.
Make sure the roof opens and closes smoothly, check for suspension creaks and inspect tyres – especially if they’re run-flats. Look out for electrical quirks, and make sure infotainment and safety tech work as intended. The AA Vehicle Inspection can offer peace of mind.
BMW generally performs respectably in reliability surveys, sitting mid-table among premium rivals. With the Z-Series, some owners have reported issues with minor electrics and run-flat tyres, so it’s worth keeping an eye on those. If you stay on top of servicing and maintenance, you’re likely to find the BMW Z-Series a dependable choice – and many drivers report being very happy with their cars’ reliability.
