Entering into the busy compact SUV class meant that the Subaru XV immediately hit established contenders like the Nissan Qashqai. However, what the Subaru was able to offer - four-wheel-drive on all models - meant that it could go further off the beaten track than your typical crossover.
With a sturdy interior and an impressive suite of safety features, the XV is a quirky alternative for drivers who need a more go-anywhere option.
Subaru equipped the XV with loads of standard safety equipment. Many autonomous emergency braking systems come equipped on all models and Euro NCAP even awarded the XV a full five stars in its crash tests. The XV could also come equipped with Subaru’s impressive ‘Eyesight’ technology, which uses cameras and monitor the road ahead and detect any potential hazards.
You’ll find the option of either 1.6- or 2.0-litre petrol engines available with the Subaru XV, while there’s the choice of five- or six-speed manual gearboxes or a CVT automatic. A 2.0-litre diesel is also available for those who want it.
All versions of the XV come equipped with air conditioning as standard alongside 17-inch wheels for a more premium look. After 2016, facelifted models introduced a much-improved central touchscreen, too. Look out for SE versions as these bring the best balance between equipment and price, introducing heated seats, a reversing camera and automatic lights among other features.
You can expect to get around 43.5mpg from the smaller petrol engine XV, while the 2.0-litre version should return around 40.9mpg on the combined cycle. The diesel, meanwhile, should return up to 50.4mpg.
Given that the XV does have some level of off-road ability, we’d make sure to check the bumpers and front undertray of the car for damage that could come through heading into trickier terrain. Look out for scratched interior plastics, too. An AA Vehicle Inspection could help to take away some of the worry from a used-car purchase, too, providing a detailed report from a trained specialist.
Subaru vehicles have a good reputation for reliability and the XV is no different. An AA Vehicle Inspection is another way of making sure you’re getting the right car for you, too, and can help to make your decision a little easier.
The Subaru XV is available with 1.6- and 2.0-litre petrol engines, as well as a 2.0-litre diesel.
