Overall rating 4.5/5The Subaru Legacy is one of the quirkier cars to have graced the UK’s roads. While the Legacy had been a popular option among Japanese car importers previously, a UK-bound model arrived on sale between 2003 and 2009 and was available in either saloon or estate layouts.
With a big boot and a spacious interior, the Legacy ticked many estate car boxes, while its sportier driving style made it somewhat different from other more comfort-focused options on the market at the time.
The Legacy is equipped with a full stability control system which can help when travelling over slippery or damp surfaces. You’ll also find a full range of airbags equipped throughout the cabin and a seatbelt reminder comes as standard, too. When Euro NCAP crash-tested the Legacy in 2009 it was awarded a five-star rating.
Two petrol engines are available with the Legacy - a 2.0-litre and a 2.5-litre version. All get four-wheel-drive as standard and there’s the option of either manual or automatic gearboxes, too. A 2.0-litre diesel was also available on estate versions.
All versions of the Legacy come well equipped as standard, bringing features such as cruise control, electric windows and electric mirrors. Handy features such as headlight washers are also included on all models, too. ‘S’ specification cars gained an electric sunroof and heated seats, while ‘SE’ models add in highlights such as leather upholstery.
You can expect to see around 47mpg from diesel-powered Legacy cars, while 2.5-litre petrol versions should return around 33mpg. Expect to see these economy figures drop on automatic gearbox versions.
The Subaru Legacy is largely trouble-free, but we’d make sure that interior plastics haven’t been scratched. Likewise, these petrol engines have a decent level of performance and as such, need to be maintained regularly, so check that any car you’re looking had has a good service history. For more information about a car you’re thinking of buying, try an AA Vehicle Inspection. It’ll provide a clearer picture of the vehicle thanks to a detailed report from a trained technician.
Subaru Legacy vehicles are known for their reliability, but we’d always make sure that any car you’re looking at has been well maintained during its lifetime. For added peace of mind, an AA Vehicle Inspection can help.
The Subaru Legacy is available with 2.0- and 2.5-litre petrol engines, as well as a 2.0-litre diesel.
