Overall rating 4.5/5Some SUVs may look the part but have very little off-road capability whereas the Subaru Forester offers genuine go-anywhere technology and a rugged level of build quality throughout

As with many of Subaru’s models, the Forester was originally launched in the late 1990s as a chunky, off-road-inspired model that could get people where they needed to go - wherever that may be. The present-day model, in production since 2013, follows much the same line, bringing genuine off-road ability and a chunky, go-anywhere look.
The Forester is a common sight on the used market, too, and though it may not be as popular as conventional choices like the Nissan X-Trail, it remains a great option for those drivers who need a reliable and assured SUV.
The Subaru Forester has all of the key safety features that you could need, including a full suite of autonomous emergency braking systems for a variety of driving scenarios. It also has active lane assistance, which can alert the driver if the car starts to swerve out of a lane. Euro NCAP awarded the Forester its full five-star safety rating when tested in 2019 and it was during this session that it also scored an impressive 91 per cent rating for child occupant safety.
There’s a 2.0-litre petrol available for the Subaru Forester - available in two different power outputs - alongside a 2.0-litre diesel for those who would rather it. There’s also the option of either a six-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic.
All versions of the Forester get plenty of kit, including heated seats, dual-zone climate control and electric seat adjustment for the driver’s seat. Handily, all cars get a seven-inch infotainment system and though it is a little clunky, it still has all of the key features that you need.
Expect to see around 43mpg from the lower-powered petrol option, or around 33mpg on the more powerful variant. All cars get four-wheel-drive as standard, too, and you’ll find that many versions are more economical when equipped with the automatic gearbox. Switch to the diesel Forester and you should see up to 49.6mpg combined, making it the more efficient choice.
Given its off-road focus, it’d be worth checking the exterior of the Forester for any damage that may have occurred by taking it off the beaten track. That means looking at the bumpers for scrapes and dings and looking underneath the front undertray for damage. If you’d like a more in-depth report about a car you’re looking at, then an AA Vehicle Inspection can help. With it, a trained technician will provide a detailed report outlining any major issues they encounter on the vehicle.
The Subaru Forester has a proven track record for reliability, and you’ll see that reflected in our owner’s review pages. However, an AA Vehicle Inspection could help bring extra clarity and take away some of the mystery that comes with buying a used car.
The Subaru Forester is available with a 2.0-litre petrol engine in two states of tune alongside a 2.0-litre diesel.
