Council in embarrassing fine u-turn

30,000 motorists, fined for a straying into a bus lane, are having their fines repaid.

Hertfordshire Council will reimburse motorists after a Traffic Penalty Tribunal confirmed that signs warning of a bus lane restriction were unclear. The tribunal also ruled that the sign had been illegally placed, an oversight which makes the puzzling fines unenforceable.

The council has had to make an embarrassing, and costly u-turn, agreeing to contact some 30,000 motorists and re-imburse their fines as well as cancelling claims against a further 4,000 drivers. Any unclaimed reimbursements will be given to charity.
