Motorists looking to drive home on winter roads this weekend should do so only after taking precautions, it has been claimed.
Car care specialist Comma states that this Friday will be one of the busiest days of the year in terms of accidents and breakdowns on highways.
December 21st is the last Friday before Christmas and also marks the winter solstice when daylight only lasts seven hours and 49 minutes.
It added that in Spain, Italy and Austria, it is a legal requirement for drivers to carry high-visibility vests.
According to company spokesman Mike Bewsey, motorists need to make sure they do all they can to stay safe.
He said: "When the Christmas holiday period finally gets underway, most peoples prime objective is to get home to the family."
If icy conditions affect the road over the weekend, it may be an idea for motorists to drive slower in order to avoid longer stopping distances.
