Car registration plates with a welsh theme

A sale of cherished plates that spell the names of towns in Wales, such as BAN 90R, CLW 7D and NEA 7H, as well as WEL 5H and CY51 MRU (cymru) will be auctioned at the Celtic Manor Hotel near Newport, Gwent, from April 16th until April 18th.

Boxer Joe Calzaghe, one of the most famous Welsh sportsmen, will be in America preparing for his bout with Bernard Hopkins, but in his honour, the saleroom will also auction the plate "BOX 33R"

Damian Lawson, marketing manager for DVLA Personalised Registrations, added: "WEL 5H is all about Welsh pride and we couldn’t ask for a better ambassador than Joe to help promote our next auction.

He’s a living legend, it’s just unfortunate he won’t be able to attend the Celtic Manor in person."

Cherished plates can easily be worth more than the vehicle which supports them – registration plate "F 1" exchanged hands for £440,625.
