Expert Opinion

Suzuki is more than just a motorcycle manufacturer, and if there's one car that highlights this it's the Swift. Although it has come in many guises and forms over its history, it is in its most recent generation (third) that it really shines. Both the 1.2 petrol the 1.3 turbodiesel offer a drive mixing agile handling, good pace and affordability that few other superminis can match, while their cousin the Swift Sport is arguably the leading hot hatch option in today's market. It is still a supermini though, so its 211 litre boot can be an issue for some, but good cabin space, reliability and good run costs, means that it is a sensible car with bags of fun.

About Suzuki Swift

Suzuki first introduced its Swift in 1983 as a compact and affordable alternative to more mainstream rivals – a path which Suzuki has followed ever since. It wasn’t until 2005 that the Swift became more of a credible rival to models like the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa, being more stylish to look at and great to drive.

The latest fifth-generation Swift arrived in 2017, before receiving light tweaks for 2021, and resorting to a mild-hybrid-only powertrain. Across the generations Suzuki has always offered a racier version, with the latest Swift Sport being an affordable entry into hot hatch ownership.

Why buy a used Swift?

Suzuki has always prided itself on delivering value for its customers, and the Swift is no exception. Across the generations, it’s always proven a more affordable option to other superminis – not least the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa – with the latest version’s £13,499 starting price undercutting both of those cars by around £3,000. Those savings continue to be passed on when it comes to used examples as well. You also still get a lot for your money, with even mid-range models coming with features like LED headlights and adaptive cruise control.

The other thing that the Swift majors on is the fun factor. Thanks to its lightweight construction (it weighs less than a tonne, which can’t be said for any rivals), this Suzuki is impressively agile and nimble to drive, with sharp steering and limited body roll making it a huge amount of fun. It also gets things off to a great start for the upgraded ‘Sport’ model, which is even more enjoyable, and a great alternative to pricier hot hatches like the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Another thing that’s a rarity in this class is the fact you can get the Swift with four-wheel-drive, which is ideal for those people that live somewhere remote and need a more capable car, but don’t want to commit to a proper 4x4 that will be far more expensive to run.

The Swift also delivers much lower running costs than many other models in this class, with its mild-hybrid petrol engine being impressively efficient. Suzuki claims up to 60mpg, which should be achievable if you’re careful, while CO2 emissions of 106g/km are some of the lowest of a car in this class. Even the Sport benefits from a mild-hybrid system, and will also be an affordable option to run.

Swift updates

Here’s a short history of the Suzuki Swift, which dates back to 1983.

  • Suzuki introduced its SA310 in 1983, which would be renamed as the Swift later in the year. A sporty GTI model hit showrooms in 1986, establishing a history of Swift (pardon the pun) hot hatches.
  • A second-generation Swift arrived in 1989, majoring on value for money. It would also be rebadged as the Subaru Justy. It would continue on sale until the early 2000s, when the Swift name disappeared for a few years.
  • It wasn't until 2005 that the Swift returned, this time as a far more modern model. Available in three- and five-door styles, it was compact, good to drive and well-priced. A racier Sport model arrived in 2006.
  • A fourth-generation Swift arrived in 2010. Though looking more like a facelift, the new car was larger, better to drive and used a new more efficient 1.2-litre petrol engine. A four-wheel-drive option also joined the range. The hotter Sport version hit dealers in 2012.
  • A brand-new Swift arrived in 2017, being lighter, more powerful and more efficient than before. It introduced a new mild-hybrid powertrain and new range of technology. As the pattern goes, a new Sport model arrived in 2018.
  • Suzuki refreshed the Swift in 2021, bringing more standard kit, default mild-hybrid engines and light styling changes.

What should I look for when buying a used Swift?

  • Higher-spec models come with diamond-cut wheels. While they look great, if they have any damage they can be expensive to repair, so inspect an example thoroughly before buying.
  • Interior has quite a lot of cheaper materials which can scratch and scuff easily, so look for any excessive wear and tear.
  • As with any city-aimed model, look for any parking damage, dings, etc. Mismatched panels are an easy sign of repairs.
