Used Honda HR-V
First released in 1999, its 1.6 litre engine is by no means entirely limited to life on tarmac, but that is where its buzzy and energetic nature really comes to life - something which makes it bags more fun to drive than many of its similarly compact SUVs. There's little in the way of modern comforts, but inside there is plenty of usable space primed for growing families (both three and five door varieties exist). Although discontinued in 2005, the HR-V remains not only a left-field choice, but also a good value, exciting one.
