The DS 4 scored well when crash tested in 2011, with Euro NCAP awarding it the maximum five-star rating. For the time it did remarkably well for safety assistance technology, too, scoring 97 per cent in this area. A full electronic stability control system comes as standard, as well as a speed assistance feature. 

The DS 4’s engine range kicks off with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine, followed by a more powerful 1.6-litre version. Then, there’s a 1.6-litre diesel, with a 2.0-litre diesel-powered unit then offered in two states of tune. Both manual and automatic gearboxes are available. 

All cars get dual-zone climate control as standard, alongside a seven-inch infotainment system which offers smartphone integration systems as well as media and navigation functions. Switch to higher-spec Prestige models and you’ll get a rear-view camera. Crossback versions, meanwhile, get a slight boost in ride height and could be finished in an eye-catching orange exterior colour. 

If you’re after a petrol, expect to get around 56.6mpg from the entry-level 1.2-litre petrol engine, or 47.9mpg from the larger 1.6. The 1.6-litre diesel, meanwhile, should return up to 72,4mpg, while the larger 2.0-litre versions should still be returning up to 67.3mpg combined. 

While the DS 4 was equipped with lots of equipment, some areas of the cabin weren’t the best built, so look out for loose trim or areas of damage. Check over the seats to make sure that they haven’t been torn or stained, too. You might want to consider an AA Vehicle Inspection when looking at a used DS 4, too. With it, you’ll get a clearer picture of the car thanks to a detailed report produced by a trained engineer. 

DS 4 models are largely reliable, though some have suffered from loose trim pieces. Some cars have also been hit with seatbelt failures due to incorrectly torqued mountings, so check with the owner to see if this has worked.
