DS kicked things off in the UK in 2010, at first creating rebadged versions of existing Citroen models. However, since then, the DS brand has emerged as a firm in its own right and though many of its cars are still underpinned by similar technology that you’ll find in Citroen cars, they’re far more luxurious and finished with higher-quality materials.
Today, DS has embraced electrification and has a wide range of hybrid and electric models. There’s good availability of DS models on the used market, too.
The latest DS cars come equipped with a broad range of safety features, many of which employ autonomous technology. DS Drive Assist brings with it a variety of assistance features such as lane-keep assistance and adaptive cruise control, while certain models even have night vision for better visibility during darkness. Blind-spot monitoring and a driver attention monitoring system are both features that you’ll find on many DS cars, too.
DS offers a broad range of powertrains with its cars, with the plug-in hybrid and hybrid models able to deliver the best efficiency. It still offers a diesel setup on the DS 4, however, and this can actually return an impressive 74mpg combined. The regular DS 4 hybrid can return around 54mpg combined, too, while the plug-in hybrid has a claimed efficiency of up to 181mpg - though you’ll need to be travelling on electric only power for much of the time in order to achieve this.
When shopping in the used market, you can get a DS3 hatchback for around £2,500, though this will be an older model with higher mileage. Expect to pay around £6,500 for a newer example with more average mileage. If you’re after something larger, then examples of the DS7 SUV start from around £11,500.
The current DS line-up is dominated by electric and hybrid models. Full EVs include the new No 8 and DS 3 E-Tense, which can bring respective ranges of 466 and 248 miles. Then you’ve got the DS 4 plug-in hybrid, which is the only PHEV offered by DS, followed by regular hybrid versions of the DS 3 and DS 4.
Most used DS examples have proven to be reliable, though the DS3 has been subject to multiple recalls, so make sure that any car you’re looking at has had these completed if they qualify. Some DS3 cars also suffer from excess oil consumption, so it could be worth checking the levels of a car you’re thinking of buying, both before and after a test drive.
DS cars are often used as family cars, so we’d make sure that the interior is free from damage. Cars like the DS3 are popular first-time car options, too, so make sure that clutch feels natural. An unusually high biting point or gears that slip could be signs that the gearbox is on the way out. However, if you’d like a professional to take a look, then consider an AA Vehicle Inspection. A trained engineer will then be able to check the car over and create a detailed report showcasing their findings.
If you’d like a more in-depth look at a used DS car you’re considering the purchase of, then an AA Vehicle Inspection is a great option. Check through what the service offers today.
DS cars are currently available to lease via AA Cars, with models such as the DS4 and DS7 there to choose from.
