Overall rating 4.5/5Its simple engineering and rugged construction have helped it build a loyal following among drivers. The Daihatsu Terios is built for people looking for a small yet tough package. The first generation (1997-2005) was one of the first small SUVs out there, praised for city manoeuvrability and basic running costs, although it offered limited on-road comfort. The second generation (2006-2010) stepped things up with a roomier interior and more modern styling. Today, the Terios is a capable and affordable alternative to the Suzuki Jimny, Fiat Panda 4x4 and older Toyota RAV4 models. While it may still struggle on motorways, it can keep up with traffic on slower roads and tackle bumpier terrains.
As the Terios is an older car, you won't find advanced safety features here. All models benefit from the basics, including dual front airbags and ABS brakes as standard. Later models (2006-2010) were given four out of five stars for adults and three out of five stars for children in Euro NCAP crash tests.
A first-generation Terios (1997-2005) has a 1.3-litre petrol engine. The updated second-generation (2006-2010) is built with a 1.5-litre petrol engine for a bit more power and flexibility.
The Terios keeps things straightforward. Expect manual air conditioning, electric windows and a basic stereo with CD player on higher trims. Later models added features like rear parking sensors, but there’s very little high-tech kit by modern standards.
On average, you can expect around 35mpg, depending on driving habits. That's pretty normal for a car with off-road abilities but isn't the most economical.
Make sure the four-wheel drive system works, as it’s key to the Terios’ appeal. Look for wear on suspension, rust underneath and signs of excessive off-road use. Always ask for a service record and consider The AA Vehicle Inspection before you buy.
The Terios has an excellent reputation for mechanical reliability and appears to have few issues as a result. Some parts may need to be bought from specialist suppliers. But with basic maintenance, most Terios models keep going strong.
