Overall rating 3.5/5The Dacia Logan MCV is all about maximum capacity and minimum fuss. Launched in 2013, this estate became the UK’s most affordable car in its class. It rivals the likes of the Skoda Fabia Estate and Ford Focus Estate on space, but undercuts them on price. Boot space is its real claim to fame – there's 573 litres available with the back seats up and just over 1,500 litres with them folded, making it a go-to for busy families, DIYers and dog-lovers alike. The car features simple engine options, basic equipment on entry trims with more premium features like Bluetooth and cruise control available, and generally low running costs in line with its affordable sale price.
The Dacia Logan MCV comes with essentials like ABS, front and side airbags and Isofix child seat points. But modern safety aids such as autonomous emergency braking and lane assist aren't available on most used Logan MCVs. The car scored only three stars in Euro NCAP tests in 2014, mainly due to its lack of advanced safety features.
You can pick between three engines: a 1.2-litre petrol (which was replaced by a 1.0-litre in 2017), a peppy 0.9-litre turbo petrol and a more economical 1.5-litre diesel for higher mileages. Engines are shared with other Dacia and Renault models and are therefore tried and tested.
Entry-level versions come with the likes of power steering as standard, but tech is pretty basic. As you go up to higher models, expect to see additions like cruise control. But Dacia did offer lots of optional extras, including touchscreen systems, Bluetooth and rear parking sensors. So you may well find some of those on your chosen used car.
The Logan MCV is built for economy. Official figures show the 1.5-litre diesel returns up to an impressive 74.3mpg and the 0.9-litre turbo petrol up to 56.5mpg. These engines also have an Eco function which can cut fuel consumption by up to 10%. The 1.0- and 1.2-litre petrols manage around 48 to 50mpg. Real-world use may be slightly lower, especially for town driving.
Given the car's practicality, check for signs of heavy use, including wear in the boot and suspension. Inspect alloy wheels and bodywork for damage and check that all interior switches work. For extra reassurance, consider The AA Vehicle Inspection.
Owner feedback is generally positive, with people praising the simple mechanics and low running costs. Dacia, as a brand, has scored well in UK reliability surveys, too. Still, some owners report minor build quality issues, so regular checks are wise. There were also some historical issues with airbags and diesel fuel leaks – speak to a local dealer to see if your used car could be affected.
